What Does an Electrician Do?

Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in domestic and commercial properties. Typical household jobs include fitting new sockets and light fittings, rewiring rooms or an entire property, installing consumer units (fuse boards), adding outdoor lighting, setting up electric vehicle charging points, and connecting kitchen appliances. Electricians also carry out periodic inspection and testing, issuing an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) — a document you may need when selling a home or renting a property.

In the UK, certain electrical work in bathrooms and kitchens is classified as "notifiable" under Part P of the Building Regulations, meaning it must either be carried out by a registered competent person or be inspected and certified by your local authority. Always ensure your electrician is registered with a Part P scheme.

Electricians generally charge between £45 and £85 per hour, with call-out fees of £50–£100 on top. Fitting a single new socket typically costs £80–£150; replacing a consumer unit runs from £500 to £1,000 including certification. A full rewire of a three-bedroom house can range from £3,000 to £6,000 depending on the property size and any remedial work required. An EICR inspection for a standard home costs around £150–£300.

How to Choose the Right Electrician

Only use an electrician registered with a government-approved scheme such as NICEIC, NAPIT, or Elecsa. These schemes allow tradespeople to self-certify their work meets Building Regulations, so you receive the correct documentation on completion. Ask to see their registration card, check it on the relevant scheme's website, and always get at least two written quotes for larger jobs. A good electrician will carry out a thorough assessment before quoting rather than giving a figure over the phone. Make sure any completed work comes with a Minor Works Certificate or Electrical Installation Certificate as appropriate.
